The World of Keshi: A deep dive into the vibrant identity during the golden hour of youth
In the last days of June, when the mid-year sun is still at the peak of summer, the meeting with Keshi becomes even more heated with what he wants to say about his 20s, about the most brilliant youthful years of a Vietnamese-American artist.

When we talk about the number 20, maybe the most coincidental for Kenshi is that he is in the ending period of this youthful era. Before entering his thirties, our singer makes his presence felt with a new album and appearance on L’Officiel Hommes Vietnam’s cover. With this, he marks the start of a new era for a publication so rich in masculine energy on the Vietnamese market and showcases his maturity as a musician.
“I understand more than ever why they say that your twenties are the best era in your life. It is like how I had almost three different lives during that period,” Keshi reminisces. To him, it isn't easy to choose one most memorable moment because everything was dreamlike, either as a normal person or a humble young artist who wrote gentle songs that went viral on SoundCloud from his bedroom. During that time, Keshi talks about his fame as though it was only legit when he participated in Late Night With Seth Meyers alongside his teammates, on the same day that he performed at the legendary Radio City Music Hall, in New York. “I feel like I was at the peak of what I worked hard to achieve, as if all the decisions I made in my life happened right at that moment. When it ended, everyone sat in the hotel’s lobby to watch our performance on TV. Even when we were exhausted cause we just performed at the most iconic place, no one wanted to miss this broadcast debut. That is one of my fondest memories.” – Keshi shared.
Dual Identity: Leading a double life
In the first half of his twenties, it was as though he had a faithful encounter with the number two. He led double lives, Casey Lương at daytime was a nurse who cared for the ill, and Keshi at night was a singer/musician who mended broken hearts. Two different time frames, a laborious job from 9 to 5 and songwriting with all his heart for the rest of the day. This double life made Keshi feel like making music was necessary to retain his alertness – it was also a mental runaway from the 8-hour grind. The creative urge helped him to go from a passive position in his daily life to a position of agency. This led to a risky but worthwhile decision – leaving his nursing job to become a full-time artist. Thinking back, Keshi says: “When I just left my day job, I was shocked regarding how much time I have for music. I was happier, more satisfied, and I felt like I was at the place where I was supposed to be much earlier.”
In one interview, Casey Lương shared that the Keshi identity was intended to be a thin veil. He is a Vietnamese American but spends his whole life in America. The Vietnamese legacy in Keshi is mostly at the level of subconsciousness and nostalgia. He cares about Asian fashion and harbors a deep awareness of how his cultural values are impacted by being a cultural minority in a diverse country like the USA. Therefore, “the Keshi veil” is the essence extracted from Casey Lương’s cultural background.
Keshi describes his career as “Hell/Heaven” – two extremes. To him, “The best thing in my life is that I can create art with the most talented people in the world. Whether it is songwriting, producing, filming, art directing, set designing, etc. All are joy that brings life to anything. And I haven’t even mentioned the friends I made along the way. However, I must trade off a part of my privacy. This is quite sad but c’est la vie*.” (That’s life).
Nighttime healer
20:00 is the golden hour for nighttime entertainment. This is when anyone who wants gentle silence and yearning seeks Keshi’s magical melodies. “The SoundCloud’s Prince” rose to fame in 2017, however, our singer has realized recently that the best time for creativity is whenever it happens. To construct life from moments of epiphanies, Keshi will postpone any commitment, from hanging out and eating to sleeping, if he feels an upsurge of inspiration. According to Keshi, the biggest lesson of his twenties is that no matter how successful you are, you still have to face doubts and skepticism. That is the moment Keshi realizes he needs to keep working hard for himself, to become someone the skeptics do not think he can be.
In 2020, Keshi used to share that he felt like his music had become “no fun” and “lost its authenticity”. He felt lost and did not know where to go. Yet, with the support of producer Elie Rizk, Keshi sought changes in his music and rediscovered his passion, as well as a new direction for his music. Regarding this rough patch, he says: “The pressures that I have to endure never fade but I feel like I am no longer the only person to carry that weight.”
Although Keshi is trying to grasp a life where many things are uncertain as a young musician with a unique and emotional sound, he is not letting that prevent him from rising upward. The album Requiem will be out September 2024 marking the maturity in Keshi’s music. The album has a more grandeur vibe and is tailor-made for performing on stage. Keshi also noted that his writing skills have been much improved after years of performing. He also poured his heart and soul into the vocal performance of this album.
When the silent hero gets loud on stage
Talking about the importance of virality in today's society and the slow but steady track that Keshi persists to have his place in music lovers’ hearts, Keshi reflects: “From being covert and mystical, I have transformed into a lively being – a part of my private self which I can freely share with the outer world. This being is raw, romantic, theatrical, and never should be conflated with trends. Regarding virality, that is not something reliable and I don’t think that it is what you can control or pursue.” In a world obsessed with overnight success, contemplating his career, Keshi affirms that: “The important thing is creating the kind of music you like because it is the fundamental of our human experience, we can no longer be ourselves without it.”
Therefore, not running after trends, from the very beginning, Keshi has created music that is completely for himself. He says: “I always consider the artist’s responsibility as a form of curation. In an abstract sense, that is trust in your taste which you hone through listening to countless tunes, discerning what you like and dislike, and then reflecting that in your sound. I just create music that I like to make, to which I love listening.”
"You cannot create music to satisfy the entire world,
even if you could, the first listener is always yourself" _ Keshi
Right now, with the number of international fans he has, Keshi has found a way to balance his personal creativity with attracting millions of fans through dissecting deeply relatable personal pains and experiences, including struggling with being exposed to the public eyes, deciding between his multiple identities to find his calling, moving far from home to pursue his dream, relying on fame to overcome self-doubt, sincerely connecting with someone, as well as sensuous moments, among many others.
Up until now, Keshi’s music has matured and is ready to conquer bigger stages. His artistic visions have been slowly realized one concert at a time. This is an arduous journey that Keshi details: “At every intersection, my idea about a live concert always gets diminished because there is no way I can tour without getting into debt. No artist in the world would not want to produce music on large scales if they could, but to strike a balance between what is meaningful and practical, between production cost and creative vision, it is the most brutal “ritual” in any touring process.”
Moving from intimate performances to big stages, facing crowds with over 20,000 people, the performer must mentally prepare, especially when they are the type of artist who starts by writing hit songs in his bedroom. From this private space, Keshi shared that he was nervous when he first stepped onto the stage, but after so many performances, his anxiety dissipated. This is solid evidence proving that he has matured as a performer. The performing experiences also impact the way he creates new music in Requiem. Each song on the album is designed to create memorable, emotional moments that keep people reminiscing.
So, right now, is Keshi still worried about his future?
“I will only be more anxious (smiles). It is like I am on a rollercoaster that only goes higher and higher; however, we can always enjoy the ride.” – Keshi muses.
